about
Memory
I wrote this one using this borrowed concept from Thomas Wolfe’s You Can’t Go Home Again after leaving Nashville in early 2021 in the wake of the pandemic. It was a hard time in my life emotionally and financially and I wanted to capture this feeling of being unable to ever return to a place you’ve left. This one is the oldest song on the EP. I first demoed it in my bedroom with a bass and drum machine. It sat around collecting dust for a while because I couldn’t sing it in a way that felt comfortable. It went through several iterations in the studio. We tried multiple synth lines, guitar leads, etc. and slowly cobbled together something that felt right. I pulled my hair out trying to get this one to sound correct and there were a bunch of happy studio accidents that I kept - accidental amplifier breakup due grounding issues, random synthesizer flourishes, etc. It’s a hard fought victory to finally put it out.
